Luthien

Edition of 495

Luthien Tinuviel was the daughter of Thingol and Melian of the Maia. Thingol was King of Doriath and the Sindar as well as the High King and Lord of Beleriand and the mightiest Eldar (Elf) after Feanor himself. Beren son of Barahir saw her dancing in Doriath after his escape from the traps laid by Morgoth and through the many layers of defenses laid around Doriath. He was smitten with her, pursuing her until she returned his love. Her father stipulated that he would only allow their marriage if Beren brought a silmaril as a gift. Beren and Luthien together wrested a silmaril from Morgoth although it eventually cost Luthien her immortality - and the silmaril would cost Thingol his life. Their story is told in chapter 19 of the The Silmarillion, Of Beren and Luthien.
